'My friend butchered the spelling of her kid's name – it looks awful'

Picking a baby name you like is only half the battle.

Depending on what name you choose for your baby, you might have another job on your hands - deciding on how to spell it. Some names only have one common way of being spelt, but others have variations you can pick from. Do you want to name your child Reece or Rhys? Ciaran or Kieran? Sophia or Sofia?

But one mum-to-be has gone too far with an alternative spelling for her future daughter's name. According to her friend, the mum "doesn't like" the letter C, so although she wants to name her child Scarlett, she has come up with a unique way of avoiding the letter.

In a post on Reddit, the woman's friend said she initially decided on "Skarlett" as an easy way to avoid using the letter C while still making the name easy to read and pronounce. But in a bid to make the moniker even more "unique" the mum-to-be has opted to make another change. Instead of an E, her daughter's name will now include a Y, making it "Skarlytt".

The friend wrote: "I smiled and nodded when she told me but I was internally cringing. Her husband has no say and just does whatever she says. She's very much the queen of her home. I'm not sure how to tell her that spelling is awful or if I even should."

Commenters on the post were gobsmacked over the spelling choice, with people describing it as "awful", "unappealing", and a "disaster". Some even urged the friend to tell the mum-to-be to "grow up" and just use the traditional spelling.

One person said: "Scarlet/Scarlett is pretty. Skarlytt is a disaster and screams ego issues. Please for the love of god, somebody convince her to just go with the normal spelling. Scarlet is already unique enough."

Another added: "It's visually unappealing (read ugly but I'm trying to be nice) and seems pretentious in a silly way. Poor kid." While a third also stated: "I know a Scarlett and she's lovely and has a nice name. Skarlett is visually unappealing. Skarlytt is even worse."
